The decor in this beachside home in Sydney’s Coogee was in need of an update. Enter interior designer Darren Palmer, who reinvented the space with smart & stylish design touches.
The beauty of the project was that the client has a very clear sense ofstyle, Darren Palmer was merely on hand to make the client’s imaginings a reality. The timeline however gave a month from first meeting until photoshoots for OK magazine so clear vision and decisiveness was an absolute necessity.
"Darren did an amazing job - I could not be happier! He came up with ideas we would never have thought of. We now have two very sophisticated rooms that are also family friendly. Everyone who comes to the house compliments us on the lounge room and it is a great space to have friends over."
This two-bedroom Sydney penthouse, Darren was confronted with a bare shell, with just floor tiles already there "I was asked to bring life into it, layer in natural textures for depth and make it warm, but contemporary it was to be masculine and solid, not delicate, but also cosy"
Starting with a beautiful, architecturally designed home, Darren Palmer Design Studio provided furnishings and decoration - in the process making this house a livable and practical designer home.
This apartment had been unchanged since it was completed in the 1950s so it had a rather impractical layout with little floor space.
The object was to upgrade the aesthetics, maximise the floor space and include a washer and dryer into the space. The apartment was dark, so finishes were selected for their light reflectivity and smart, crisp aesthetic.
The iconic 1920s building was the first thing that attracted interior designer Darren Palmer's attention. "We had friends who lived in one of the apartments and whenever we visited I remember thinking that they lived in the best building in Sydney." says Darren, who admits that his eye always went straight towards the decorative original plasterwork, high ceilings, and elegant bay windows.
According to the Art Deco society of Sydney, the building
is one of top-three art deco buildings in the area. It was also heritage-listed,
meaning that Darren had to work in consultation with council and experts
throughout the renovation.
Walking into the apartment from the ornate 1930s elevator, it seems
a borderless transition from old-world charm to contemporary class.
