Rug Size and Placement Guide
Most rug mistakes are size mistakes. Colour gets all the attention when people shop, but size is what decides whether a room settles or keeps feeling slightly off. A rug that is too small floats in the middle of the floor and pushes the furniture away from it, and a room can carry a rug one size up far more gracefully than one size down.
The living room
The rug should reach under the front legs of the sofa and armchairs so the furniture and the floor read as one zone rather than separate pieces sharing a space. For most Australian living rooms that means 290 x 200 cm. If the sofa faces a pair of armchairs across a coffee table, 330 x 240 cm lets every piece keep a foot on the rug. In open plan rooms, 400 x 300 cm is the size that defines the living zone properly, with the rug finishing where the zone should.
The bedroom
Run the rug under the lower two thirds of the bed, clear of the bedside tables, so you step onto it from either side in the morning. Aim for 60 to 70 cm of rug showing past the sides of the bed. A queen takes 290 x 200 cm comfortably, a king is better served by 330 x 240 cm.
The dining room
The test is simple: pull a chair out to sit down, and it should stay on the rug. That means the rug needs to extend 60 to 75 cm past the table edge on every side. For most six seat tables that is 330 x 240 cm, and for eight seats or a wide pedestal table, 400 x 300 cm.
Hallways
A runner works when it leaves a margin of floor visible along each side, framing the run rather than carpeting it. Our runners come in 300 x 80 cm for most hallways and 400 x 80 cm for longer runs, and each one is made to pair with a rug from the same design, so a hallway can hand over to a living room without changing its mind.
The sizes we make
