How to turn your bachelor pad into a stylish retreat

Is your bachelor pad letting you down in the style stakes and affecting your romantic success? Here's our best advice for updating your home, stat!

Did you know that having a tackily decorated or messy home is a deal-breaker for most singles? According to relationship site eHarmony Australia, 60.3 percent of Australians would break up with someone they’d just started dating if they were unimpressed with their home.

“In other words, you could be single and dateless because your home isn’t up to scratch,” explains Emma Blomfield, interior stylist with furniture and homewares retailer The Home. “But fear not, you can make your room or home more inviting for love with a few simple and affordable tweaks – most of them can be done just in one day,” she says.

If you suspect your pad might be working against you, here are a few ways to fix that...

1. CHOOSE A SOPHISTICATED COLOUR PALETTE

Show your true colours by adding romantic shades to walls and furnishings. According to Shaynna Blaze, Taubmans Brand Ambassador and Colour Creative Director, dark colours such as indigos, deep purples and blues are perfect for a sophisticated yet intimate interior scheme. These tones create an intimate, moody ambience and enhance the soft, evening light.

2. THINK ABOUT SCENT

Scents are strongly linked to romance, and can be used to provoke sensual feelings. Vanilla, sandalwood and rose have long been used as aphrodisiacs, and scents such as jasmine, patchouli and ylang ylang also allude to romance. Get a fragrant candle or diffuser to make sure the scent of love in the air. (Sorry, we couldn't resist!)

3. GET SOME BLOOMS

Flowers and romance go hand in hand, and research has proved that the presence of flowers makes us think, speak and behave in a more romantic way. For the next date night, buy some fresh flowers and put them in a beautiful vase so they can’t be missed!

4. ADD INTEREST TO THE WALLS

Bare walls spell bachelor pad, so throw up some artwork to make your space feel like a home. Not sure what kind of art you want to buy? Abstract and watercolour pieces are always winners as they aren't too crisp and clear, meaning their blending colours work well with most interior styles.

5. INVEST IN GOOD LINEN

As you make your bed, so you must lie on it – and an unmade bed is unromantic, so chances are you’ll be lying on it all by yourself! Make your bed with fresh, clean sheets. Bamboo sheets in 400TC are great for lovers. They have a luxurious feel and are made of breathable material - they'll cool you down when things are heating up.

6. GO TACTICLE

Throws and cushions breathe instant life into a bed or couch (and encourage cuddling). Go for feather insert cushions for extra snuggliness.
